Susan Swartz Studios Hosts Navalny Launch Party, Sundance 2023

Susan Swartz Studios is pleased to welcome back visitors to the Park City studio during the 2023 Sundance season. Since opening its doors, the studio space has hosted numerous events each Sundance Festival, from film launch parties to artist talks and panels. This year the Studio is showcasing a series of prints by Daniel Roher, Director of award-winning film Navalny.

Navalny tells the story of the investigation into the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The film premiered during the 2022 Sundance Film Festival season, where it won the Festival Favorite Award and the Audience Award for the U.S. Documentary Competition. Navalny is also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature Category at the 95th Academy Awards.

The film will have a second Sundance screening on January 26. With the 2022 festival taking place primarily online, the film’s launch will be celebrated at Susan Swartz Studios this year.

During the filming, Daniel Roher created a series of works, titled Navalny: A Kaleidoscopic (Making Of) in 10 Collages. The series is composed entirely of drawings, paintings, doodles, and gum wrappers from 18 sketchbooks created from September 2020 and June 2022.

The prints will be displayed alongside the work of Swartz, whose paintings are characterized by vibrant colors and rich textures inspired by the natural world.  Swartz creates with the impassioned intention of inspiring viewers to revere and protect the environment.

Born on the East Coast, Swartz attended Edinboro State College where she studied art as a first-generation college student.  She has exhibited extensively across Europe and Asia and was honored as the Olympic Environmental Artist during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.  Swartz is in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (DC), the Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing), the International Olympic Museum (Lausanne), and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts among others. She is now based in Park City, Utah where she creates abstract paintings that explore the intersection of nature and spirituality.

Susan Swartz is now represented by Jason McCoy Gallery of New York. Her work will debut at the New York Gallery with a solo exhibition from February 15 – April 7, 2023.
