“Renewal” Solo Exhibition at Georges Bergès Gallery

Nature's Bouquet 66, 2023, Acrylic on linen, 48 x 24 in.

Georges Bergès Gallery presented Renewal a Susan Swartz solo exhibition in SoHo, NYC this fall. The opening on October 10th was incredibly successful with a full-house turnout, and the run of the show continued to draw such a tremendous response that the exhibition was extended through Thanksgiving weekend. Curated by world-renowned art critic and historian Donald Kuspit, Renewal encapsulates memories and nostalgia with fading flowers and textured paint, leaving viewers questioning whether memory is something we have or something we've lost. The exhibition features original paintings primarily from the recent Sunflowers, Evolution of Nature, and Nature’s Bouquet series and incorporates a few earlier realism pieces in reference to Swartz’s artistic evolution. Of the featured body of work, Kuspit wrote,

“Swartz shows that nature and woman are indomitable, for they are inherently creative and sacred. Susan Swartz is the best abstract painter of nature alive.” -Donald Kuspit

Upon attending the opening, Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post, posted on her personal Instagram account encouraging her followers to do themselves “a favor and go see the stunning show.”

The local Village Star-Revue published Stephen DiLauro’s review of the exhibition titled “Seeing Great Art Free in Downtown Manhattan.” In the article, DiLauro praises Swartz work, stating,

“The quality of Swartz’s relentless passion is ever-present in this powerful exhibit of work by an accomplished and much-lauded painter.  Renewal is a chance to enjoy a museum-quality examination of this important artist’s work, without an admission fee.”

Renewal coincided with Swart’s two-person installation at the Palazzo Bembo in Italy at the 60th Venice Biennale alongside Laddie John Dill, an exhibition titled Impermanence that was also presented by Georges Bergès Gallery. Upon the closing of Renewal which can be viewed online here, Georges Bergès Gallery included the following three paintings by Swartz in the 2024 winter group exhibition currently on view through January 11th:
