Navalny Wins Oscar for Best Documentary Feature
March 17, 2023
We are thrilled to announce that Navalny won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12th, 2023. The documentary investigates the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Susan Swartz was an Executive Producer of this film. Advocacy for social justice, health, and the environment through film is part of Swartz ongoing vision to shed light on important issues and inspire change.
Navalny premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival where it received the Sundance Festival Favorite Award as well as the Audience Award for the U.S. Best Documentary Feature Competition. With the 2022 festival being entirely online, we were fortunate to be a part of the honorary 2023 in-person screening, and to host concurrent film premiere events.
As part of the 2023 in-person screening and celebration, Susan Swartz Studios exhibited a series of prints by Navalny Director, Daniel Roher. The prints are after a series of drawings and collages created during the making of the film, titled “Navalny: A Kaleidoscopic (Making Of) in 10 Collages.” They are comprised of drawings, paintings, doodles, and gum wrappers from eighteen sketchbooks completed between September of 2020 and June of 2022.
Congratulations to Daniel Roher, Alexei Navalny, and the entire Navalny Documentary team!
