Evolution of Nature 24, Acrylic on linen, mixed media, 48 x 48” 2022

Susan Swartz Studios is thrilled to announce that Evolution of Nature 24 will be up for auction at the Sotheby’s Impact Gala on September 28th in support of Instituto Terra.

This is an exciting event for Susan to participate in as 100% of proceeds will be donated to Instituto Terra, an organization with a cause that aligns tightly with Susan’s own values as a passionate environmental advocate. Instituto Terra is the ambitious project of infamous Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado and his wife Lélia Dluiz Wanick to restore hundreds of acres of rainforest in Brazil that were diminished to a mass of barren, infertile land at risk of detrimental erosion. Since the project began in 1998, nearly three million native trees have been planted, bringing back more than 250 animal species and revitalizing over two thousand degraded water springs among many incredible feats.

“Evolution of Nature 24” is an inspired selection for the gala because while Susan’s work always comes from nature, the Evolution of Nature series is especially closely aligned with her divine regard for the natural world. This body of work pays tribute to the natural elements that healed her from two environmentally-borne illnesses while acknowledging the dichotomy of nature with reverence–capable of ailing and healing, the natural world is both powerful and fragile, deserving of humanity's utmost respect. Dried fruits, flora, and herbs are used as material alongside other nutrient-rich organic elements in the complexly layered compositions.  The results are succulent, sculptural, playful, and opulent. The series debuted at Galerie Noack in Berlin in September of 2021, and Susan is ecstatic to present “Evolution of Nature 24” at Sotheby’s, a 48x48” piece that is particularly vibrant and joyful.

“I’m often described as an environmental artist and that is an honor, but it is not a political stance for me. I seek to pay tribute to nature by painting the world as it is meant to be so that we are inspired to protect it and take care of it.”

Blessings,

Susan
